A far from perfect wedding reception PDF Print E-mail

In 1999, we provided a disco for a 40 year old man who had evidently divorced his wife to marry his 21 year old secretary.  Their wedding reception was held at The Moat House Hotel (Reading).

The day had gone exceedingly well until the disco began, although we can hardly be blamed for what happened next.  With all good intentions in mind, the groom had decided that he wanted his two children from his previous marriage to be there, but they were still very young, so of course he had invited his ex-wife to take care of them.  She in turn had brought along her two brothers, who were each built like Mike Tyson, for some emotional support.

All went well initially - after the meal and speeches, the bride and groom danced to their especially selected First Dance song, and everybody else then got up and joined them on the dancefloor.

However, unlike most weddings, when the dancefloor stays filled throughout the evening, our DJ found that he was losing the crowd and after about half an hour the room was virtually deserted.  The DJ asked the duty manager where everyone had gone.  His reply was “you might as well pack up and go home, mate.  They’ve all left.”

Understandably, after the slow dances, the ex-wife had been so upset at seeing her former husband being so romantic with the woman he’d left her for, that her two brothers had decided to take the groom outside and beat the living daylights out of him.  He ended up in hospital and the two brothers spent the night in a police cell.

So much for the happiest day of one's life!  If you are divorced, we recommend that you don't invite previous spouses to your wedding unless you know that they are really cool about it!
